Mao found Lin Biao useful when he began the Cultural Revolution. Lin Biao was key to getting the army behind Mao. He also promoted Mao’s cult of personality and “Little Red Book”. But, as was not unusual with Mao, the alliance did not last. They are believed to have fallen out and Lin Biao died in 1971 attempting to escape from China.
